What the app collects
Nothing. ShowNotes does not collect, transmit, or store any personal data. Specifically:
- No analytics or telemetry of any kind
- No crash reporting
- No usage tracking
- No device fingerprinting
- No network requests except a single license verification call at activation (see below) and optional auto-update checks via Sparkle
Where your data lives
Your decks and cards are stored in a single JSON file at ~/Library/Application Support/ShowNotes/state.json on your Mac. User preferences (theme, font size, opacity, window position) are stored in standard macOS UserDefaults. Both are local files that never leave your machine.
License activation
When you activate a license, the app makes a single HTTPS request to Paddle’s API to verify your transaction ID. This request contains only the transaction ID — no device identifier, no personal information. After verification, the result is stored locally. The app does not contact Paddle again.
What Paddle collects
Purchases are processed by Paddle.com Market Limited, who act as our merchant of record. When you buy ShowNotes, Paddle collects your email address, payment details, and billing address to process the transaction, send your receipt, and handle VAT. Paddle’s privacy policy is at paddle.com/legal/privacy.
We do not receive your payment details. We receive only your email address and transaction ID from Paddle, which we use solely for license recovery if you contact support. We do not use your email for marketing, newsletters, or any other purpose.
Auto-updates
ShowNotes uses Sparkle for update checks. When enabled, the app periodically contacts our update server to check for new versions. This request contains your app version and macOS version — no personal information. You can disable auto-update checks in the app’s settings.
Cookies and website tracking
The ShowNotes website (shownotes.app) does not use cookies, does not run analytics scripts, and does not track visitors. The checkout page loads Paddle.js, which is subject to Paddle’s privacy policy.
Children
ShowNotes is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Data deletion
Since the app stores no data on our servers, there is nothing to delete on our side. To remove all local data, delete the app and the ~/Library/Application Support/ShowNotes/ folder. To be removed from Paddle’s purchase records, email [email protected] and we will request deletion on your behalf.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. For material changes, we will note them in the app’s release notes.
